Using Varenicline for Smoking Cessation

To demonstrate how varenicline should be used for smoking cessation, we will be using Champix® products as an example.

The recommended dose for smoking cessation is starting with a 1-week dose titration, followed by 1mg of varenicline twice daily. The dose titration aims to reduce the incidence of nausea.

Champix® is available as a starter pack to make the dose titration process easier.

To use varenicline for smoking cessation, the smoker should first decide on a quit date. This can be any date that the smoker feels ready, comfortable with, and helps maximize the chance of success.

The smoker should then start taking varenicline 1-2 weeks before the quit date. For day 1-3, the smoker takes 0.5mg of varenicline once daily. The tablets should be swallowed whole.

From day 4-7, the smoker takes 0.5mg of varenicline twice a day. From the 2nd week onwards, 1mg of varenicline is taken twice daily, and the smoker should aim to stop smoking some time in the 2nd week.

Following this, 1mg of varenicline twice daily is then taken for a total of 12 weeks (including the dose titration period), and if the user has successfully stopped smoking, a further 12 weeks of varenicline can be considered.
