“ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING: WITHIN AND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM”

This year, the Taylor’s 8th Teaching and Learning 2015 (TTLC2015) has chosen to focus on “Assessment for Learning: Within and Beyond the Classroom” in recognition of the power of assessment for learning as a way of raising student achievements.

With this theme, the conference provides fertile ground to stimulate and compare responsive assessment approaches and practices on established as well as relatively new areas of assessment such as graduate capability assessment in view of the need of educational institutions to evidence graduate employability.

Sub-themes

The conference sub-themes are set out below. The committee particularly welcomes papers that challenge current research, policy and practice and is happy for contributors to interpret them broadly.

1. Assessing extra-curricular activities for graduate employment outcomes.

In today’s globalised environment, great importance is placed by the industry, governments and international bodies on graduate employability.

This sub-theme covers practice and research on assessment for:
  • extracurricular activities that enhance the employment outcomes of graduates
  • graduate attributes
  • enhancing life-long learning
  • experiential Learning

2. Innovative Assessment Approaches.

This sub-theme investigates innovative approaches to assessment which are sustainable within educational institutions.

  • interdisciplinary assessment
  • the process of implementation for innovative assessments – from the pilot to the large-scale

3. Assessment in a technology-rich learning environment

Technology-rich environments provide an exciting platform for experimenting with new ways of exploring how students learn and how teachers can best evaluate how well students have mastered materials.

This sub-theme covers practice and research on assessment for:
  • technology in assessment
  • engaging students with technology-rich assessment approaches
  • authentic assessments and technology
  • e-learning assessment
  • Web 2:0
  • e-portfolios and assessment in blended learning environments

4. Assessing Professional Competencies & Institutional Initiatives

This sub-theme recognises research that investigates assessment for learning at the institutional level, especially efforts for change.

This sub-theme covers practice and research on assessment for:
  • teacher performance assessment and evaluation methods and instruments
  • assessment systems
  • academic standards
  • validation and quality in assessment
  • policy development for assessment for learning
  • grading systems
  • provision of feedback with different class types
  • development of disciplinary standards between professional bodies and academics.

5. Other Issues in Assessment for Learning

This broad sub-theme relates to challenges in assessment for learning, such as subject-discipline assessment, work-based learning, diversity and inclusivity and many more that are not already covered in the sub-themes above. Where subject discipline issues are addressed, contributors should ensure that their work include both the context of their subject-matter as well as the implications for other disciplines.
